I was writing this song as I stuck my head out the window for minutes at a time while driving 65 mph, on route I-78 at 4 AM. Right after I opened up for Mike Doughty. I didn’t write the whole song like that, but I think part of the second verse.
This song is about the gradual lost of humanity that a person goes through…. when working and living in a system that puts profits over dignity, and the bottom line over compassion.
I’ve been reading a lot of books lately regarding animal cruelty that goes on in factory farms (one such book is Jonathan Safron Foer’s Eating Animals). It’s pretty horrendous, and definitely influenced some of the images in this song. But nearing completion, I realized it can be interpreted in any setting where suffering is endemic.
I thought a lot about my birth country, The Philippines, as I finished this song. About the men who do the dirty work for the politicians and the oligarchy there. The executioners.
I don’t think we are born monsters. I don’t think the murderers of my Lolo were born depraved. But they were taught it. Gradually, and gradually.
That’s what I attemped to shine a light on with this song. Grandiose and perhaps a bit bombastic, I guess. But it’s an honest attempt.
I’ll put a rough demo I recorded (using my iphone voice record) up soon. Within the next couple of days.

vs 1
Slaughterhouse cage
going back into the dark age
when the light hit your pale face
you fell to the ground……..
they were caught in all the nets that you brought in;
dirty secrets when no one was around
——————v2
stun gun, writhing
you were constantly denying;
anesthetizing your heart as it drowned
from these hellish visions
it was part of the mission to show no weakness
no mercy allowed;
—————— vs 3
you position ;
it was never their decision;
best intentions you slit from their eyes…
flood of darkness washed away remaining conscience
blood on your breath
you live;
they die
———————
ch:
Well you knew
you knew
still you continue
convincing yourself there’s nothing wrong ;
you are way gone
you are way gone
And you do
you do
you do
you do
‘til there’s no avenue
you can return to
you are way gone
you are way gone
you are way gone
